Advice for New Runners

by Isis on June 27, 2011

The Urban Dare in Fort Worth, one of our first races together

We were all new runners at one point of time. It’s only fair to share our experiences and advice with those who are beginning their running journey. We recently asked our twitter community if you could tell a new runner 1 thing and 1 thing only as they embark on their running journey, what would it be? Here’s what they said!

@bmlueb Brian Lueb
Smile and have fun after all it is simply running.

@Running_Nina Nina Renee
Embrace it and enjoy it.

@JasciaRed Jascia Redwine
If you could tell a new runner 1 thing and 1 thing only what would it be?” that’s it’s ok to WALK
@ValDazzles ::Valerie::
Getting through the difficult “beginning” phase will help you see and understand that (cont) http://tl.gd/ba8u0v
@trigolfer Derek W
always keep it fun no matter what!
@HannahKatTaylor Hannah Taylor
don’t run on your heels!!!

@cecemimi17 Cecilia
When you think you can’t go any farther, do it. You’ll surprise yourself every time. You’ll never regret it.
@jmsenger John Senger
stock up on Bodyglide :)
@TreyHernandez Trey Hernandez
have fun and run relaxed!
@ddooly Dustin Dooly
just put some shoes on and go. My first run was in a pair of tennis shoes I borrowed from a 13 year old.
@BrennanAnnie Ann Brennan
Make it a habit and it will become easier.
@StartRunningNow Raul and Rachel
Expect to be transformed. Running has a way of making life make sense. Just know running is a journey…savor it.
@ksterba Kristen S
I would tell them don’t give up. When I started the C25K program I never imagined I could run more than 3.1 miles.
@LifeisaRun Teal & Beth
You’ll have bad days, but keep going bc a good day is right behind it!
@jharpold Jason Harpold
If someone tells you that you HAVE to be doing x, y, or z they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. #Running
@cstanderfer Courtney Standerfer
Run the mile you’re in
@holabirdsports Holabird Sports
When you hit a wall just remember, “Running won’t kill you, you’ll pass out first!” ~Anonymous
@dela1000 Daniel
Is not about speed, is about completion.
@kimrunsWA K Denny
I say stick with it and you will grow in amazing ways, be patient and enjoy the journey.
JasonFitz1 Jason Fitzgerald
Be patient, it takes years of practicing the fundamentals to see your potential.
@polkadotskies Elizabeth
Run your own race!
the first 15 mins of a run always suck.
What 1 thing you would you say to a newbie runner?

Race Day Recovery With Athletes HoneyMilk

by Team Hargrave on February 25, 2011

Chocolate HoneyMilk

There are a so many things to think about when preparing for a big race, especially the night before. You have to make sure you lay everything out and not to eat something that will upset your stomach. What a lot of people don’t think about is their recovery 30 minutes post race. We are willing to say that most depend on what’s available at the race finish area. This is usually water, some type of protein, fruit, and junk food.

We have a better idea – well a couple actually. Athletes HoneyMilk is an all-natural recovery drink perfect for post race recovery. HoneyMilk has both whey and casein blend so that you have the fast and slow acting protein. Another plus is that it’s lactose and gluten free, so it won’t upset your tummy. So here are a few ways to get what your body needs post race.

  • Put a few bottles of Athletes HoneyMilk in the freezer the night before your race. Then in the morning, put the frozen bottles in your gear check bag so you can enjoy a cold one at the finish.
  • Have your amazing, loving, supporting friends meet you at the finish line with a cold Athletes Honeymilk.
  • Since Athletes HoneyMilk doesn’t have to be cold to be great, you could just throw one in your gear bag or have your friends/family bring some to the race.

If you’re running the Cowtown Marathon this weekend make sure to stop by and see us at the HoneyMilk meetup on Saturday from 11am to 1pm. Check the details here. (There will be free HoneyMilk for all!)
