Labor Day 5k Recap

by Isis on September 7, 2010

Local 5k’s are the best! We recently ran the Labor Day 5k put on by the Fort Worth Runners Club and Luke’s Locker of Fort Worth. The race was very well organized and just plain fun to run.

This race was a part of our CrossFit Endurance training. Our goal was to run it as fast as we could while still feeling good. We had planned on eating well the day/night before and getting a good amount of sleep. We ended up eating out for all three meals the day before and waking up 30 minutes prior to the race start….not registered. It was definitely a last minute rush to get our bib and head to the starting line.

At the start of the race, we were weaving through the usual crowd. It started to thin out around mile 1 and our pace started to pick up. At one point, Isis started running sub 8-minute miles and Lee had to remind her to pace herself.

We crossed the finish line 25 minutes and 36 seconds later. Isis was 3rd in her age group and Lee was 12th in his. We had an average pace of 8.12 per mile. We were both rocking our Brooke’s Green Silences and had no troubles along the way. See all results here. Three of our Endurance training buds finished in the top 5!

How was your Labor Day?

Race Recap: El Scorcho

by Team Hargrave on August 3, 2010

The Running Couple takes on El Scorcho

This year was attempt 1 for Isis and attempt 2 for Lee to complete El Scorcho. We had the pleasure of hosting Jennifer Whitter, @jenn_if_er. For those of you who don’t know her, she is truly a beautiful person. We had such a blast taking her to our favorite eateries and Super Target!!

The day of the race, we had no idea what to do with ourselves. It’s totally different preparing for El Scorcho than it is when you are prepping for an early morning race. You don’t know when to eat dinner, when to nap and most importantly, when to meet up with friends! We hit up Spiral Diner for lunch around 12:30pm and Central Market for dinner around 7pm. Jennifer and Lee were able to nap during the day, but Isis worked during the day and was not able to nap until about 9pm. Strangely enough, Isis felt great after my power nap and was ready to take on this race!

One the way to the race, we picked up another good friend Adam Pfaff (@thetrailto26); Adam always provides a little comic relief and we were glad to have him along to ease the pre-race jitters. Before the race we set up the turnaround point for the 5k loop and loaded up our cooler with drinks and food to sustain us for 7 hours (the max time allowed for the 50k). The only problem with doing this was the ~1 mile walk to the starting line. When you’re a 50k what’s 1 more mile…right?

The atmosphere at El Scorcho was awesome. Just imagine 500 crazy runners and all of their supporters getting together for one big party! We went into this race focusing on having fun and not worrying about our time. This would be the first time we had ran 31 miles and we had not really trained for this distance.

The first 5k went surprising well and we were confident that we could run the whole 50k. The more we ran, the more we believed in our CrossFit Endurance training of speed work rather than distance work. Around the 3rd 5k (or lap), Lee’s Achilles started hurting him and both of our feet started to swell.  Lee’s pinky toe was the size of his big toes. About half way through the 4th lap, we decided to not push ourselves to hard and to make sure we “smart” with our training for the Chicago Marathon. So we pulled out of the race as a couple even though Isis felt like she could probably still keep going.

Big thanks to Fort Worth Run Co, Cowtown Marathon crew and lululemon Fort Worth showroom for being motivators during the race! We will definitely be back next year!

Race Recap: Warrior Dash Texas

We had heard great things about the Warrior Dash and were super exited it was coming to Texas. Guess a lot of people felt that way because it was sold out in no time. We were so bummed we missed the mark and contacted Red Frog Events to see if there were any spots open. [...]

Race Recap: Dallas Rock n Roll Half Marathon

First of all, the fact that Isis PR’d has nothing to do with our opinion of the Inaugural Dallas Rock n Roll Half Marathon. That said…this race rocked! Let’s start with the expo. While we heard that this expo was going to be smaller than White Rock, we thought it had a lot more vendors. [...]

Race Recap: Cowtown Half Marathon

This year was a great year for the Cowtown series! They had a record breaking year with more than 21,000 runners. This race was not our strongest but the events leading up to the race were the most fun! Lee’s parents came all the way from Illinois to support The Running Couple. They even came [...]

Race Recap: Austin Half Marathon

Our first half marathon of 2010! With the San Antonio Rock n Roll and the Dallas White Rock half marathons behind us, we decided to take it easy in January and save our bodies for Austin…and we are glad we did! While Austin’s route was very hilly, it didn’t slow Isis down as she PR’d. [...]

Race Recap: Big D Climb 1.30.10

Thumbnail image for Race Recap: Big D Climb 1.30.10 January 30, 2010

Today was an especially cold day in Dallas, 20 degrees to be exact. There was literally ice all over our parking garage when we left our apartment this morning. With that being said, we were SO glad that our race was inside of Fountain Place. The race was a hit right from the start! When [...]
