Why would anyone want to run a half or full marathon?

The 2006 Chicago Marathon

When I first started dating Lee in 2006, he was training for the Chicago Marathon. I thought he was completely nuts and mighty good-looking. I never in million years would have thought that I’d be running next to him for 26.2.

When I went to support Lee run his first marathon, I realized the magic and aura a marathon brings to ones life. I was so inspired that weekend; I knew I had to join in on the fun. For me, there are so many things that make running the distance totally worthwhile.

  • The location: How often do we get to go on vacation for ourselves? Usually it’s for a holiday or graduation or something. Choosing destination races are the perfect excuse to take a “you” vacay.
  • The swag: There are a couple of really great races that give the hook up when it comes to race packets. We have gotten backpacks, t-shirts, water bottles, etc. So fun!
  • The crowd: Ever have that dream where you are on top of the world and tons of people are cheering you on? Yeah- that happens at these races. Try putting your name on your shirt and everyone will be cheering your name!
  • Fellow runners: We HEART the running community.  With the help of Twitter and Facebook, it’s super easy to hook up with fellow runners attending races. Have you heard of our Chicago Marathon Twitter T idea yet?
  • Feeling of accomplishment: Uhmm hello! Running 13 + miles is A LOT. Not many can say they can do it yet along wish to do so. Give yourself a pat of the back or by those cute smiley face stickers. You deserve a “job well done.”
  • New wardrobe: Its bound to happen…train for a race, you will be losing weight.

Why do you sign up for half and full marathons? What races are on your list for the rest of the year?

I THINK I’ve decided to run the Hartford half in October. :)

I did my first one to prove to others, but mostly to myself, that I could finish what I started. I’d been putting off my graduate thesis for, ahem, several years and I wanted to show that I could follow through on something BIG when it counted. Been hooked ever since. And the fellow runners? AWESOME reason to keep doing it!

Next up: Tyler Marathon, NYCM, maybe FW marathon, White Rock… then ???

Great post! I ran my first 5K in October 09. I am running my first marathon in October 10. Everyone thought I was crazy, but it’s really the best experience of my life. My favorite part – the friends I’ve made in the running community. It’s a really special bond!

Running started out as something I couldn’t do. I was overweight and unathletic. Then it became something I could do after losing 40 pounds and walking for three months. Now, running is something I have to do. It’s cathartic. It’s who I am. And it feeds my need to succeed. I have always struggled with believing in myself. But when I finish a race, I feel like I’ve accomplished something HUGE – something so many people can’t do. I’ve complete three half marathons and am currently training for Chicago. Some days I’m scared. Can I do it? Other days I’m so pumped I cant wait for 10.10.10! We’re also running the Route 66 half in November and the Dallas White Rock half in December. Can’t wait for Dallas – it was my first half and doing it again a year later will be a huge celebration! Some people run to compete. Others run to complete. I’m a completer. Nobody can run as good as me as good as I can run as me. :) So no matter what, I win!

I signed up to train for my first half marathon (2009 White Rock half) because my friend was doing it. Since then I’ve done three halfs (WR, Rock n Roll Dallas, Heels & Hills – going for four with Heels Hills & Him in September). Now I am training for the White Rock full in December!

    I run because I can.

As you know, I’m running my first marathon, Dallas White Rock! I’m so pumped! And scared. Each year I challenge myself with a new race distance…5K, 10K, Half, and now FULL. I’m kind of curious what happens after I complete the full marathon. Tri? I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready for that. Well, I’m excited to hear all about your Chicago race. It’s coming up! Go Running Couple!

i’ve always wanted to be a “real” runner. i never could break that mental hump to run without walk breaks. it was always hard to run 1 mile straight.. forget running more than 2.5 altogether. then i don’t know. i can’t really explain it.. i just somehow overcame that mental roadblock and now i’m training for my first half in september or october (still haven’t decided which one to pick!) i’m addicted. running is an accomplishment, therapeutic, relaxing and challenging all in one. it’s funny.. it really seems like “once a runner, always a runner.” :)

One thing you neglect to mention is “me time” — in this crazy, busy, never-enough-time-in-a-day world, the longer I spend on the trails, the more decompressed and destressed I feel. There is nothing — and I mean NOTHING — like knocking out a 20-miler, then celebrating with s steamy cup of coffee on a cool & cloudy fall morning. Moments like that are rarefied and precious.

Thanks for this wonderful reminder of how rewarding running is. There are moments in the week where I forget why I’m putting all this effort into training. THANK YOU!!
& yes, Nair does really work, but if you have a scratch or an open wound it’ll leave you wish a rash.

I sing up for races for many of the same reason you guys do – but my number one reason is seeing friends!!! I seriously don’t know how I ever ran before I found all my running twitter/blogger/daily mile friends. Y’all make this journey so much more fun! The highlights of this year are the trips I’ve taken to run races with friends. Without running I would have never seen so many different cities this year!!!

Nest up for me are 2 semi-local half marathons & tri (EEK!) in September, then a half, Chicago, and 2 10ks in October :)

I took on running “seriously” about 5 years ago for health issues. But after I had accomplished that stage, it then turned into a challenge… then to meeting friends… then “just because”… and now that I’m living in South Korea it just allows me to see this beautiful country, since they have a very active running community. In the end I run because it makes me feel good :)

Love love love your site! My husband did Crossfit for a while and he has done a couple triathlons. I am recovering from ankle surgery so I’m gradually getting back into it. Where do you find the time to do all of those fun things?! I’m jealous! I will definitely be following the blog, and I’m sure I will see you around lululemon!

I signed up for a half marathon as part of getting in shape. I decided to sign up for a marathon as well (the California International Marathon on December 5, 2010) and having something to train for has really kept me motivated to stick with my fitness goals. I was 325 pounds on January 1st this year and am now down to 239 and still dropping. I sign up for these races to keep me on the right path towards being in shape and to be able to do something I once thought to be impossible.

Similar running path: started dating my hubby when he was training for MCM 2008. It was his second marathon. I did some running myself, but never considered myself a part of “that world.” The day he ran, I had such a blast following the race and cheering on runners that I knew I had to check off “Run a Marathon” on my life list. 2 Years later, I’m now training for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon on 12/4/10 AND I’m trying to raise $26,200 so I’ve added reason (Run for a cause) to the list of why I do this.
