Our Favorite Things: Road ID

by Team Hargrave on July 2, 2010

Accidents happen…even to runners. While we don’t like to think about these events, it is always a good idea to be prepared. Each year approximately 450,000 of us are taken to hospitals unconscious and without identification. This is where Road ID comes in. Road ID was formed by the father and son team of Mike and Edward Winner in 1999. Their mission has been to educate outdoor athletes about the importance of wearing ID as well as creating some pretty cool (if we don’t say ourselves) ways to include as part of their gear.

We have had our Wrist ID Elites for quite some time now and they have become a permanent part of our running repertoire. Here’s our thoughts:

Isis:

I have always loved my purple Wrist ID Elite. Its perfect for someone like me who is rough with her belongings. I went with the Elite over the Sport wrist ID because of the rubberized band. Lee had a watch once that had a cloth-like Velcro band and after a few runs and showers…that thing started to smell funky! Now I tend to go for more waterproof and anti-stink products. I also like the fact that it was so easy to adjust to my size. They have ridges that you can measure what length you need and then you simply cut the band to make it your perfect size. (Check out the video on Wrist ID Elite page) It is very light and doesn’t move around a bunch when I run. It is my favorite Road ID product so far.

Lee:

While Isis is rocking the purple Wrist ID Elite, I decided to go with the matte black band. I wanted to make sure to have something that went with all my running outfits (just kidding…really…it just looks cool). The great thing about the Elite is that it looks great. While I do wear it on all my runs, I also sport it at the office. The Wrist ID is light enough that it doesn’t bother you while running and is very comfortable during long runs. I also like that it still looks brand new after miles and miles of abuse.

Recently, we’ve been asked to test a new style of Road ID. Since we are both pretty adventurous, we wanted to try something other than a Wrist ID. Isis decided to go with the Fixx ID, which is similar to a dog tag, and Lee went with the Ankle ID. Read below for our reviews…

Isis on the Fixx ID:

I have never been a person to wear jewelry during a race, but since I loved the Wrist ID I thought I’d give the Fixx IDa try. The first thing I really liked was that there were so many ways to customize this style of Road ID. I scrolled through the many icons and to my delight, I saw a “running couple.” I HAD to have it! You can also add a colored silencer to keep it from banging other necklaces or from simply being rough with your things (which I am). When I run, I tuck the Fixx ID into my sports bra and it doesn’t bother me. If I had to choose only one to wear, I’d probably go with the wrist ID but I love wearing my Fixx ID for everyday use.

Lee on the Ankle ID:

While I had grown quite fond of my Wrist ID Elite tan line, I was excited to try another Road ID product. I thought that the Ankle ID would be a great product for me and I was right. When I received my Ankle ID in the mail, the first thing I noticed was how light it was. Road ID could have really missed the ball by creating a “heavy” product, but I can’t even feel the Ankle ID when I have it on. I am also a big fan of the reflective strip that runs around the entire band. With our upcoming marathon, the 2010 Chicago Marathon, we are putting in a lot of runs in the early morning and any extra visibility is much appreciated. Wrist ID Elite, while I still love you very much…there’s a new sheriff in town. Can’t wait to get my Ankle ID tan line.

My wife and I wear the road ID all the time, when running it goes nicely through the laces kinda like some timing tags do. I dont notice it at all and it seems like the right thing to do. If I got squashed by a truck and they couldn't identify me then my kids would not be able to inherit my mortgage and credit card.

    Kidding about the debt part.

I've been rocking a Wrist ID Elite since Christmas, thanks to my in-laws and Santa Claus. I went with yellow, because one of my greatest athletic inspirations has been Lance Armstrong — so I invoke a LiveStrong bracelet each day I run.

My only complaint was the buckle, which wore out after just six months and stopped staying attached. I'm guessing daily sweat and post-run rinsing took its toll. However, the Road I.D. krewe was completely understanding and shipped me a new wristband, no questions asked.

I love mine. When I wear it on my right wrist and complement it with my Garmin 305 on the other, I feel like a total bad-ass. Which I am.

How much free space is there for text? I would need to include information about my gluten intolerance and the gassy effects that will occur…Also that I have a fear of clowns, so if I need to be taken to the hospital, please don't let them place me in the children's ward…

This is really very useful! A simple piece of ingenuity but very useful! Thanks for sharing this one. Actually this is the first time that I have heard about this.
